Lamp of Darkness - "V" album review

A stripped-down and uniquely mellow take on black metal subject matter. In the best possible way, this sounds like a level 50 bard from a mid-1980s DnD session stepped into a dingy tavern and gave an appreciative crowd the chill-beat, slam-poetry version of the hypothetically more-hardcore death-growling main title music.

"Tomb" in particular sounds like the ambient tune for a laid-back (yet still ominous) deep-roads dungeon-crawling session. Definitely something different from my usual tastes, but I ended up genuinely enjoying and fond of it, and the 'character' created by the singer's performance and general mood. My only real 'criticism' is that nearly every track is noticeably short, in punk-throwback style, and by the time they were all over I was wishing they'd gotten more of a chance to settle into a groove!

Eclectic as hell, crafts an entertainingly, theatrically grim atmosphere that feels like it would fit right into a fully realized adventurer-punk world, and while a bit of a brain-adjustment to the lower-key mood (where other jams might rock, this one smoothly rolls) ultimately enjoyable. Quest on!
