The absolute first impression when listening to too close was what a nice synth sound it is that opens the track, the static noise embedded within it acting almost like a snare drum in itself and it taps away with its slightly bittersweet arpeggio and autotuned vocal stabs interrupt it.
It's enough to put me at ease because I knew I was probably going to like the song at least a bit, and I do. It's a trap-infused electronic hip hop track produced by gem and I think they did a great job. The song feels more defined by its texture and emotion than lyricisms, and the main words I can make out on that front are "don't come too close to me".
Throughout the whole track, those arpeggios keep playing while the heavily processed vocals harmonise and flitter on top, and it's all driven by these deep sub-bass notes and punchy trap beat. There's a constant forward momentum but you keep hearing that plea, "don't come too close to me", come back. It acts as both an anchor and the emotional core of the song.
It's pretty, engaging, and feels earnest and sincere in a way that some similar songs don't, and that's why I was happy to listen to it over and over again in the process of writing this. It's apparently the second single from the upcoming EP and personally I think that's something to watch out for.
