Like any good solo guitar record, like those by John Fahey, Henry Kaiser or Derek Bailey, Over Maribor is captivating.

At times it's idyllic, then it's manic—sounding almost like early electronic music. There are sudden bursts of "KKTOW" and "THRUMM", followed by a complete switch to some lost far-off folksy jaunt. It's lovely, honestly. It's not random at all, it's very clearly calculated, not an "then boom" but rather "here it comes". Beautifully primitive stuff.

There's a dynamism to the whole thing that I, as a listener of non-idiomatic music, really enjoy. It's got texture, it's got atonal noodling, it's got harmonics, it's got the whole kibosh of things I love to hear being performed on guitar. Wonderful structures slowly emerge, like you're watching a house being built from the bottom up.

I would very happily put Over Maribor next to Bailey's Aida, Fahey's Red Cross and various other guitar, otherwise improvised, records I have a love for such as Double Holy House or GUO4 — I assume you get the idea by now.

All in all, in totality, I look forward to listening to other albums by Eric Arn and I hope he keeps making them. Cheerio.
