It's all about choosing the right moment. And I'm so happy that One Eye Awake coincided with the command my brain executed 2 spend some time listening 2 new and exciting music. And what a time it was!
It reminded me of that distant era when I would sit and listen 2 the entirety of Bitches Brew or admire the circus-like instrumentation of Tom Waits, the electrified jazz, a bit of Frank Zappa here, a bit of Allan Holdsworth there... which is saying something!
My journey took place between New Orleans and Granada. In my head, not in reality, I wish. But Paul Rubensten led me by the hand. Perhaps he thought more about Africa than I did, but how well he thought. And well, it points 2 other influences that I might not B so clear about, but I share the admiration.
It's so difficult these days not to resist looping playlists or the occasional search 4 a specific song. It's so hard to sit down for a while (or take a walk, or have sex) and listen 2 an album. Here I found three pieces with different characters, each forging its own path. Didn't I already mention Eric Dolphy? We could go on.
But really, this is something 2 applaud: the person who made it possible, who touches everything, stretches it, hits it, twists it, mixes it, and funnels it all down for us. It's fabulous. Congratulations, Paul Rubensten.
And I would love 2 see it live with a suitable orchestra, because it deserves it.
