Incentive - "Inner" album review

Inner is a sprawling deluge of maximalist noise, awash with moments of respite.

The finely crafted compositions by Incentive pulse seamlessly from one track to the next, culminating in a cinematic experience throughout, embalming the listener in a state of tension.

Spineless is an overly washed out 12 minute track with driving kicks and hi-hat, with Incentive allowing the electronic haze to develop over its length. Excessive textural elements abound, cocooning the listener in a space free of interruptions from the outside world if they so wished.

DAMNATION NOW sees vocalist Sia De La Paz join forces adding an element of humanism to tracks on the album. The presence of her voice is distant rather than a focal element of the track, the heavy reverberation giving the sense of them being lost in a great cavern or long abandoned hall.

The album continues in the same vein, a lack of melody and an abundance in texture. It would be wrong to call this a noise album, as the sound is finely controlled and a sense of order prevails.

The album closes with deserve how i feel, which begins with the suggestion of arpeggiated melody, although the sound again is processed almost to the point of texture. Vocals from De La Paz return again, adding choral tones to the shimmering piece.

Despite being a cinematic experience, the track titles do very little to shed light on any meaning, feeling more of an afterthought than a considered concept. Overall though, the listening experience of Inner feels concise and complete.
