Let me start with the artwork on this one. I'm not sure its AI, but it gives me that vibe. For that reason I was reluctant to approach Absinthe Makes the Heart Grow Fonder. The other releases, however, have similar artwork and predate AI by good few years, so who knows.

With that out of the way...the music doesn't feel like it was made by AI. Its probably not something I will revisit again and again, but its good enough to stick around for at least one spin of the album.

I guess if I could describe it genre-wise it would be mid-tempo, spacey/psychedelic rock in the vein of Brian Jonestown Massacre. On a rare occasion (Waiting for the Teacher) one could encounter a freaky solo or something that breaks the flow, but for the most part it is slow to mid-tempo.

Here I am at track 5 and I suddenly hear something very familiar. Sure enough - its Girl from Ipanema, the psychedelic version of it! It trades the melancholy of the original for spaced out/woozy feeling.

As Spiritualized put it once - ladies and gentleman, we are floating in space! This could well be a good way to describe what's going on this here record.

If I could point out any significant flaws its that due to songs being mostly mid-tempo they all tend to blur into one. A bit of variation between tracks would definitely help. Drug Deal is probably my favorite here so far - I think the band succeeds when they break through the standard mid-tempo acoustics, like saxophone on Breathe In, Breathe Out throwing things in jazzy direction.

Perhaps another flaw would be just the sheer amount of tracks - I think cutting this down to an EP (say 5-6 songs) would make more sense. As it stands, 15 tracks is a bit too much to wade through.

First review on the site! I've been familiar with this artist for a long time so it's interesting to hear a different perspective. I've not listened to this particular release yet although it being a compilation there's a few tracks I already know, and I'd agree that Drug Deal is a particular stand out

Hey Augugst, thanks for the review! It's very helpful to get those genre tags and band references as I struggle to do that for my music. Mid-tempo, spacey psychedelic is a good definition. For the AI part, yes, I've taken a lot of real photos and manipulated them using AI, which I regret. However, there is zero AI in the music and I would never use AI for an art form I know how to make. So good catch on that front. I also appreciate the critiques, all well taken. Most of all, I'm glad you didn't single out the production as a particularly weak point, as this is a Best Of comp that dates back to 2007 when my recording knowledge was minimal, and quite spotty as late as 2020. I had a friend, Roger, who Thomas and I both know, remaster everything, so I think that speaks to Roger's ability to polish things up. Roger also did some post production on post-2020 tracks. Anyway, thanks for spending time listening and reviewing!
