ABK - "Diablitaa" track review

There was a story a few years ago about Usher sending T-Pain into a deep depression after telling him that he had fucked up music when he popularised auto-tune. Something I'll perhaps unfairly never forgive Usher for, but it is true that there was a time when the distorted autotune sound was absolutely everywhere and made everything sound the same, but if you're going to place the blame on someone, you should blame Cher. I believe that she could take it, too. And besides, it was obvious that when the tool was invented that it would be pushed to its limits and this is how many of the sounds that we hear in music every day came about.

Diablitaa by ABK feels like the epitome of that time. A loud and distorted autotune vocal over the top of a dancehall beat is not something new to me, there have been thousands of tracks like this before and there will be thousands more, and there are obviously people out there for whom this is what music is supposed to sound like. Personally, I think it's harmless, but listening to this song I wish there was something more to it. At 1:37, it's very short, and while the chorus is catchy I'm not sure what there is that I can truly grab onto. Yes, I can hear it playing in a club, and I can imagine people dancing to it, but before you know it the song is over when I've barely sipped by WKD Blue. Diablitaa is fairly successful at emulating a thing that already exists, but I'm not sure it really does enough to stand out in a pretty crowded genre, sadly.
