I never thought I’d hear an album that blends the rawness of Memphis rap with the epic feel of a medieval fantasy world, and above all, that something like this could sound so good. We’re dealing with some seriously good shit here.
Eulogies for a Lost Kingdom is definitely a concept album. While southern hip-hop serves as its main foundation, the tracks take us on a fantastical journey filled with ambient passages, synth melodies, a very interesting selection of samples, and above all, hypnotic rap flows delivered in a properly chopped and screwed style.
Mad King’s Lair is an incredibly powerful track, and probably the one that comes closest to the original Three 6 Mafia sound, the kind of song that would make any fan of the genre move their ass.
By the time I got to Travel, I felt like the album was missing a bit of the gore and brutality typically associated with the genre, and almost as if the producer had heard me, the explicit samples on Duel, Pt. 1 suddenly kick in, bringing in some horrorcore elements before continuing in a bloody fashion into Duel, Pt. 2 feat. Joey Bobby, which gets your head nodding all over again.
Even though Memphis rap has been a massive influence on countless modern rappers and genres, the Kindness of Others project feels like a progressive offshoot of the original ‘90s sound, and it’s immediately clear that it was produced by someone deeply immersed in electronic music. I definitely recommend it and I’ll be coming back to it. Also, I have to add that I got completely hooked on Mad King’s Lair.
