Coming in hot with four songs at an average 1.5 minutes, Homebody by Pocket Pool is a little ball of kinetic energy reminiscent of early punk rock. It’s got all the charms of an unassuming lo-fi recording but there is nothing harsh about the production quality, which is saturated with warmth provided by drum machine and bass that do more than just hold down the rhythm. Buzzing guitars spin up askew riffs punctuated with knifing seconds-long solos and short bursts of inspired leads, while what sounds to my ears to be a synth of some kind colors the chorus of the opener “Undercover Rubber Lover”. The vocals are sung in a relative monotone and sound as though they were an intercepted intergalactic signal.
It all works very well and is better than the sum of its parts. Each song is super tight, focused, and fun. This EP is a serious treat to listen to and goes down like a cool drink of water on a hot day. It’s quickly become one of my favorites, and I look forward to hearing more from them in the years to come. I highly recommend it to fans of punk rock, lo-fi, or just music in general. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
