KINDNESSES - "MAGNIFICENT WIPEOUTS" album review

MAGNIFICENT WIPEOUTS is a soft experimental electronic album that evokes a sense of directionless wandering.

The soundscape feels inorganic, almost mineral at times. The beginning of the album gives me the impression of a wet cave. The electronic melody meanders randomly encased in a gentle dripping reverb. In the latter half of the first track, the watery melody is replaced with bleeps from an antique computer.

The music and sound selection is constantly evolving, but the feeling remains consistent. Soft and gentle, but crunchy and lofi, wandering, stopping and starting, but intentionless and inorganic. Perhaps it's less like wandering through a cave and more like the cave system itself.

It sounds like the result of someone noodling around on a modular rack for half an hour. I don't mean this with any negativity, but if you're familiar with that semi-ambient, experimental, random, modular synth sound, then you likely have a very good idea of the experience ahead. I say this as someone who is a fan of such performances. It feels a lot like something I might have listened to at 2 in the morning while hanging out in my friend's basement.

While listening to the album, there was an occasional sound change or an unexpected development that pulled me back, but overall I found myself more in my own thoughts than in the music.

If you're looking for something a little weird to listen to while studying or perhaps it's 2 in the morning and you're in the basement with a few friends, this could be a good pick.
