The Rapid Onset - "Destroy! Destroy! Destroy!" album review

It's pretty rare that a title alone will both let me know what to expect, and get me pretty amped to listen to it, but Destroy! Destroy! Destroy is exactly that. I assumed it was going to be fun and energetic punk and that's exactly what it was. It's a shame, then, that only the first two tracks have been released so far, and so this won't be a review of the entire release.

First up, with have Fridoline. It opens with a crunchy guitar and bass riff, a screaming guitar, and the sound of an engine tearing off into the distance. It's an exciting way to kick things off, and the rest of the track doesn't disappoint. At it's core, it's a perfect pop song - Verse Chorus Verse Chorus Bridge Chorus - and it's really damn good at it. As Kiri Anne Ryan Bereznai, the woman behind the music, sings "I'm free, free, free, My Fridoline" it's enough to rival any of the new wave hits of the 80s.

The follow up, Wreck'er, is harder. It's slower and more aggressive, while maintaining the effortless cool found on stuff like Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Fever to Tell. Once again, the chorus is immediately anthemic even if the song doesn't hit quite as hard as the opener.

The impressive thing with this release is that Kiri Anne has apparently played all the instruments, and produced the whole thing. These are professional sounding recordings. Everything sounds clear while still having that level of scuzz that you would expect from something like this. They're great songs and I'm looking forward to hearing the rest when it releases on June 22nd!

This was the first album I stumbled across on this site (Just yesterday) and I love it already. Of the two tracks available now Fridolene is the perfect opener, Wreck'er is a slower track but it's still great. Lovely stuff.

I'll be keeping an eye on this one when we get the full release.
