I assume it's named after Cain and Abel, the two biblical sons of Adam and Eve, famous for their rivalry, Cain's bitter jealousy and eventual murder of his brother. That's my understanding, anyway, I'm not really a Bible type.
I thought about it, though, as I listened to ABLECANE, especially the first of its two tracks and the one that shares its name with the album. For a long time, there's not much. There's a dark, brooding ambience, before eventually a cymbal crashes. The cymbal crashes and crashes and then even later still the call is answered with a loud bang in the distance. And it's just that. These two sounds with an industrial hum in the background, in constant conversation. In constant battle.
I don't know if these two sounds are meant to represent Cain and Abel but that's how I heard it. There's something extremely uncomfortable about how they interact with each other. It's so hostile and so tense and so scary. And this goes on for a long time. Half of that first nineteen minute long track is listening in on this argument, and it's so compelling.
What's it building towards? Well, there is a climax but I almost feel like I shouldn't spoil it. But I already said what happens in the Bible story, so maybe you should use your imagination and then compare that to what actually happens by listening to the track. Just believe me when I say that it's a satisfying conclusion to the 10 minutes of building tension that led to it.
There's a sense of corruption, both in that mid section of ABLECANE and in the second track, DLCTSLNS (February 13th, 2026). Strings play loud and triumphant chords that sound euphoric at first, but then drone and twist into something darker. When they drop out they leave you in the cold rain (literally in the case of ABLECANE), and sound intensely lonely.
It makes for a really cohesive whole. This is two tracks, but they feel like part of the same piece, and the album left me very impressed with drugvomit's skills as both a composer and a producer. It's dark and scary and completely engaging.
