Can a bunny and a puppy be friends? I'm sure I've seen several videos on Instagram demonstrating that, yes, they can, and it's actually very adorable, but they never really show the inherent tension in such a relationship. Even the cutest puppy will one day grow up into something that could tear the bunny to shreds. They might not actually do it, but the puppy could harm the bunny in a way that the bunny could never dream of doing to the puppy. I don't know if this was the thought process drugvomit intended, but long distance marginal wraparound/wriparound slight lead farspeaker has be asking it anyway.
See, the opening track of this three-track EP is called puppy loves bunny, where the closer is called bunny loves puppy. They're cute, whimsical titles at a glance but when you listen to there, they sit in this uncomfortable space between beauty and tension.
The delicate and childlike glockenspiel of puppy loves bunny accompanied by a dissonant string drone while percussion crackles beneath the surface. It's beautiful, and nostalgic, and ever so slightly terrifying. As the drone progresses, it swells, while the glockenspiel fades into the ether, and it only gets prettier over the course of its 10 minute lifespan.
bunny loves puppy starts off sparser and more minimal, but has a bit more activity, or at least more noticeably. There are more interruptions to the drone, which starts off much more subdued, and ends up much more aggressive. Are these tracks telling the story of the same relationship from two perspectives? I'm not sure, but it ends fairly abruptly, at least.
Besides, there is an as of yet unmentioned track on this EP. The second track, long distance marginal wraparound, does not feel like the other two. It's darker. More overtly scary and menacing. Gone are the glockenspiel and plinky plonky piano notes and we're left with pure dissonant tension. Tension that is accompanied by scratching and scraping. Tension that is interrupted by sudden stops. At one point the whole track pitches slowly downward and it feels like you're melting. The closest reference point I have is that it sounds like David Lynch's masterpiece, Twin Peaks: The Return, feels. It's fantastic, if you're into that sort of thing at least.
The trio of tracks make for a pretty interesting and slightly opaque narrative. How does the second track relate to bunny and puppy, if it does at all? What exactly is the nature of their relationship? Are they still alive? Is bunny okay?
I don't know the answer to any of these questions. But I do know that if you like spooky drones you'll probably get a kick out of this.
