A calm river of piano floating in reverb, distant nature sounds, and endless ripples of synth pads. It’s warm on top, chilly underneath. A soundtrack to being lost somewhere entirely black and white. It’s music for a rainy day, or it creates one for you.
The opener “Veilloom” feels like the opening of a heavy door or a rusted, ivy-riddled gate. You’re introduced to the cascading synth pads, haunted piano, and distant strings. In “Weeping Downpour” you wander into a storm, building slowly until it’s just you, the rain, and the crickets. There’s the occasional strings, which come back in “Gloaming”, but a pleasant lack of any rhythm instruments.
It’s worth noting that songs like these absolutely require headphones. Or a circle of quality speakers. You miss out on a lot of intriguing details unless the music is wrapped around your head. It becomes a blanket of moss through your ears. The sounds of storms make you check the windows for raindrops.
My favorite track is “Looming In The Dark” which guides through a windy, abandoned house. What starts as curiosity slowly becomes a quiet nightmare. The monster has been watching the entire time. And just when you think it’s over, “Carpe Noctem” picks right up, the piano falling into a rhythm like fleeing footsteps.
A perfect accompaniment to a walk to nowhere. Don’t forget your headphones.
