Introduced by a cover where the colour red is predominant (the colour of bleeding hearts, the colour of flames of passion, these are the images that appear in my mind while looking at it), this album by the Brazilian group De Carne e Flores presents to us a collection of beautifully bitter tunes, eleven songs centred around themes of troubled love and internal turmoil.
The lyrics are all in Portuguese, but even if you are not familiar with the language it will be easy for you to immerse yourself in the music and absorb through your eardrums the feelings expressed by the soul-piercing vocals and the razor-sharp guitars. Some of the musical solutions might appear canonical and not particularly original for the standards of the post-hardcore genre, but I assure you that each note, each drum-hit, each reverbered chord is loaded with emotion and passion, and the songs will leave a mark on your soul.
The lyrics, in their apparent simplicity, deliver some heavy emotional blows. Gems like the following (from the 3rd track, "Sinos"):
and every step in the memory still hurts, but it would be worse to no longer remember how much your arrival changed me
hit the spot perfectly, and the musicality of the Portuguese language contributes to the enhancement of their expressivity.
As in many other cases, I believe this album works best as a whole, but I would like to mention a couple of tracks that particularly impressed me. "LCL" is embellished with some riffs that reminded me of Tricot, which break for a short moment the monolithic vibe of the record without spoiling the atmosphere. "(vejo fendas)" in my opinion represents a perfect climax, an explosion that resolves the intense build-up that goes on all throughout the album.
Well, hope I convinced you to give it a try, because it absolutely deserves it.
