I've been really happy with the response that the website has gotten and I'm so grateful for everyone who has been using it. I have been thinking about the possibility of starting a Patreon for a while and I think the best thing to do is just give it a go, and see what happens.
I'm not currently trying to make a business out of the platform, but while I built it to be as cheap to run as possible, there are still costs to running it. Specifically this includes hosting both the front end and back end, as well as the database.
What does this mean for the site?
It's very important to me that the integrity of the platform remains intact, and so I don't want to exploit people who have made the site what it is. For that reason, the core tenets of the site must remain intact. This means that the process of requesting a review is completely unchanged - each user can request one review at a time, and they will enter the queue same as everyone else, regardless of whether they are a Patreon supporter or not.
What do supporters get?
There are two key features that supporters will receive:
- Enhanced artist pages. Supporters will be able to update their artist pages by embedding a YouTube video, writing a bio, and highlighting their favourite release.
- Embedded Bandcamp player. Supporters will be able to listen to releases as they browse the site via a Bandcamp player that will site at the bottom of the page. This should be useful for sampling music to review, as well as listening to releases while reading reviews.
And that's it for now! I don't want to put too many good features behind a paywall as I want this site to be as good as possible for everyone who uses it, but I felt like these were two neat non-essential features that I think people will enjoy.
What future plans are there for the site?
If the Patreon earned enough money, there are definitely things I would like to do. I'd love to have a bit of a rebrand, and get a proper logo. I'd also love to have new features like podcasts and non-review articles like how-to guides. Really it just depends on how things go, though!
