This album has been capturing my attention for a while, so it's with immense pleasure that I finally sit down to rewiev it.
The artist Lucubrator serves us a rich plate of dark gems, all of them following similar coordinates in terms of atmosphere, but with an impressive showcase of musical variety. Some tracks have a distinct goth/post-punk flavour: "Nursery" is the perfect example (I would love to hear a Peter Steele-ish voice sing on it), but also "Last Tenant" fits well in this category.
Other tracks are leaning towards a more experimental dark/ambient style, with less predictable structures, unnerving melodies, and bone-chilling sounds. "The Life that Perceives Itself" represents this mood very well, with its combination of menacing drones and eerie piano melodies. Many tracks, for example "Sipapu" and "Rogue Carnival" shine thanks to the hypnotic percussions, which reflect the drummer background of Carlos Castellanos (the mastermind behind the Lucubrator project). The hypnotic rhythms that pour out of the drumsticks add layers of mystery to the album, evoking scenes of malicious rituals at midnight in a remote swamp.
There are some moments, for example during the opening track "Opiate", that would definitely fit the soundtrack of a horror film here and there, which is a great plus.
I would definitely recommend to listen to this album... if you're brave enough!
