If you have read my reviews before you probably know that Rap and Hip-Hop are not the genres that I engage with the most, but I am by nature a curious person and I like venturing into unfamiliar territories every now and then, and I happily do so because there are often some nice surprises waiting just outside of your comfort zone.
This single is one of those nice surprises. The track by Lex The Great, experimental rapper based in Philadelphia, sees the participation of 3 other artists, namely BrianRapz, IceBirdCajz and ELKmafia!. Each artist gets one verse to showcase their flow and rhyming skills, except for the host who gets the opening and the final one.
The thing that amazed me is the fact that despite all of them following very similar metric/rhythm (hope I'm using the right terms), each one still manages to inject their section with their own personality and style. I'd say my favourite verse was IceBirdCajz, but all of them display great abilty to deliver great lines and keep a steady flow. The rhymes are tight, the lyrics are sharp (just look at the first two lines of ELKmafia!'s verse), and everyone is clearly giving their 100%.
Interestingly, the backing track consists of only a droning pad playing the same chord all throught the track and one single percussion loop, and you know what? That's all that we need, and it works great.
I'm very happy I stumbled upon this track, and I recommend that you, dear reader, go check it out, wether you're a regular consumer of hip hop or an outsider like myself.
