One thing I miss about living in Ireland is the flourishing underground music scene. For this reason, it is with great joy that today I let Limnetic Villains take me back to the Emerald Island with their album "Bully".
Released in 2024, this record consists of 14 songs, none of which reaches 3 minutes of lenght. In these tracks we find a tasty mixture of dark electronic music and some more "traditional" rock structures. The vocals, the basslines and the steady rhythms show a strong goth-post punk influence, but the electronic elements expand the sonic horizon towards wider territories.
The atmosphere is generally dark and claustrophobic, but there are some more "airy" moments where we can catch our breath, such as in "Oh That Guy" (7th track of the album), where the guitar and the synths assume some brighter tones and gift us some lighter riffs (compared to the album's average, do not expect rainbows and confetti). Outside of these isolate episodes, most of the tracks involve some spooky elements, such as slightly dissonant harmonies, eerie melodies and distorted sounds. The lyrics are also pretty dark and bleak, which reflects the mood pretty well.
Despite that, many of the tracks are actually incredibly catchy, perfect for a halloween party playlist but also for an independent horror film soundtrack. There is a good balance between the more danceable songs and the more experimental and weird ones. This might be off putting for someone looking for only one of these two things, but it is great for listener who want variety.
Great job Limnetic Villains, and Go raibh maith agat for sharing your music with us.
