"Bearly Eagle" by "Barrelly Ego" (is this an homophonetic pun?) is one of those albus that seems to be made to be listened to during a slow drive in the countryside. The contrast between the bright tone of the instruments and the more sombre quality of the composition are perfectly balancing each other, resulting in a handful of songs that are predominantely melancholic but still maintain a little sparkle of hope to hold on to.
In terms of genre, we could esily classify "Bearly Eagle" as indie-pop, with a strong acoustic component. The vocals are the undisputed protagonists, soft and clean, with a good range, particularly expressive in creating memorable melodies. The instrumental arrangements are often dominated by the acoustic guitars, but there is also space for the piano and orchestration (such as in the closing track, with grandious strings filling the space where the piano can't reach) and occasionally for solutions that steer towards rock (for example tracks like "Stampede" and "WTFA (Waiting To Fall Asleep), where the electric guitars flex their muscles and claim the spotlight during solos). I also appreciated the use of whistling, because it reminds me of the spaghetti western soundtracks of which I've been very fond for basically my whole life, and that I try to insert in my own music whenever I can. The mixing and production are very clean and balanced.
According to the author's note, the lyrics are meant to reflect on "the most recent world changing events of the last 10 years". They surely reflect a sense of unrest and interior turmoil, almost like a struggle to adapt to the fast and unpredictable way the world around us is running. I feel they are quite relatable and I suspect a lot of people would agree.
I hope this review convinced you to give this album a try. Enjoy!
