Don's World: Chase Theme cover art

I love the cover art for Muki's Don's World: Chase Theme, which is apparently part of the soundtrack for a videogame developed by Onesquidgames. I can only assume the cover art is a screenshot of the game itself, in which case Don's World has certainly piqued my interest.

Anyway, I digress, the purposes here is to talk about the music. Chase Theme isn't a chiptune, but it does feel distinctly videogamey and distinctly retro. It opens with a big fat squelchy bass synth before being joined by drum machines and a synth lead. There's something very Streets of Rage about it all, at least in the first half. The lead synth hits that blue note to give things a nighttime air of mischief, before being joined by another synth line that I can only describe as dentist drill coded.

It's after this moment that, I think, the titular chase takes place. Almost everything drops out while the pace increases. There's a sense of eeriness with the tension as subtle and unsubtle synth leads compliment each other in the race to the exits, and then it ends. At two minutes, it's very short and sweet, and I wonder if in the context of the game, these sections are intended to be looped at all.

Either way, it's a fun little track that manages to fit in a surprising number of movements within its short runtime, without ever feeling like it's messy or unfocused. Maybe one day I'll be playing Don's World and suddely find myself thinking "Hey, I know this song!"

Hi Thomas, thanks a lot for the review! It was definitely an interesting experience, since it was my first commissioned track and I had zero visual clues of what is going to happen in the game, so I am equally curious to play it and see how well it fits!
