I'm getting '80s synth pop vibes but darker, although not without a certain cautious optimism, like walking through the ruins of civilisation while the sun is coming up and the beans you planted are growing strong. That's all in the instrumentals.
The main singer, on the other hand, seems to be singing to a tune only they can hear—or rather speaking maybe. I like their voice in itself, as it nicely fits the mood perfectly set by the instrumentals, it just seems to be doing its own thing, like sometimes trying to fit too many syllables in too small a space. Not their strongest track, I feel like. Listening to their other work with the same singer, I would say its just this particular track that isn't working as best as it could have.
I like it, although not without some reservation. Each individual part is great, but the whole is a bit lacking—although not enough to spoil the over-all experience.
★★★
Footnotes:
- Something about Henry David Thoreau living in a small cabin in the woods, growing beans and making candles from the fat of small animals, never too far from the town in which his mother lived.
- The way the singing doesn't always match the instrumentals—to me—reminds me a bit of a Swedish artist, most active during the '80s and quite frequent on mainstream radio, stereotypically writing lyrics too complex for others to struggle with. No names, though: Ingen nämnd, ingen klämd.
