lighter than air guitar loops, smothered & covered, maybe capped but certainly not chunked diced or peppered. we're talking cloud music here. sometimes these are dense clouds but they're still clouds.
like the photo that adorns the cover, this is blurry, squinted at, sensed in the periphery but never witnessed directly. this is pretty pure ambient music and your mileage may vary but i think your enjoyment of it will come down to your relationship to that fact. if the idea of distant, smeared and swirling sounds with recurring, unchanging phrases and motifs sweeping back and forth for about 30 minutes appeals to you, you're going to love this. i'm personally more drawn to music that has some more grit and texture as a reminder that sound is a physical phenomenon but that's just me.
according to the liner notes, this was recorded over two days. i'm not sure if it was live with no overdubs but would believe it if the artist told me it was. i'd also believe it if they said that 'over two days' meant from 11:30 pm one day into the early morning of the next, that's how consistent the listening experience is. i have a lot of respect for spontaneous music in general. the choice to record this quickly and share it with the world tells me that it was probably the result of an inspired moment of music making and it feels good to be a witness to a document of that.
i'd say this would appeal to fans of artists like shifting harbor, stars of the lid, eluvium, eno's thursday afternoon, etc.
