One of the joys of DIY music is that you never know when you're going to be exposed to weird shit, and I would say that The STAR U'll never B qualifies as weird shit. The manner in which the title the spelled and stylised lead me to expect that this would be a hip hop track, and the opening drum loop only solidified that expectation. There's a fairly simple and steady beat, and then what sounded like a fairly off-kilter guitar loop underneath it.

That should have been my clue.

The guitar wobbles and wibbles and echoes and scrambles to find new pitches, and then maybe the clumsiest lead guitar part in the world joins in while what sounds like some kind of synth follows behind. It's around this time that I notice that it's been 90 seconds and the beat hasn't changed, and the vocals which I know are coming are nowhere to be seen.

Some more guitar until finally at the 2 minute mark the world's loudest and most distorted vocals come in. They're as wobbly as the guitar. And it shouldn't work but it kinda does, kinda. As a tambourine comes in it all starts to click together into this weird funk groove. It's messy sounding, but that constant beat, now accompanied by claps on the second and fourth, drags you through. There are moments when things pull away and you're treated to the a cut up guitar loop while D3la.HOZ noodles over the top and it's pretty cool.

I can't say there's much intentionality here, it sounds to me like it's very much a jam, and perhaps one that doesn't really know when or how to stop.

So it just kinda... stops.
